Rainy Merdeka of 2010

>> Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Raining cats and dogs on Malaysia's 53rd National Day. It was raining like mad just now while driving back home. I can barely see the road with the heavy downpour. Adrenaline rushed, panicked, tried to keep calm.... reminded myself to stick to the lane I was on, drive as slow as I can. Put intense concentration, focused, dilate the pupil... Fuh~~ Tired leh!

Talking bout Merdeka @ National Day, after midnight I saw a gang of Mat Rempit did their stunt on their very "intelligent" motorcycles. They did the superman stunt like the pic below. Got it from this blog. Crazy!! I was so shocked cus first time mah right in front my eyes, in front my car...dang! Guess they practiced so hard that it is a must to show-off on street.

They call this 'Aerodynamic Pose' aka 'Superman'

Photos of Mat Rempit I found/saw from this blog, that I would not want to see twice. Eeew!

Websitetester.biz - Real business?

>> Sunday, August 29, 2010

Continuation from my previous post...

It's 31st August and also near to 1st September 2010 which means it's near to the end of pre-launch of Website Tester and also to the launching of Website Tester. I am sure everyone out there are curious like me. Curious to know what will we see on that day of the launching day.

So, those who don't want to miss out this opportunity...go here to experience it. Below is the official interview article with M
ichael DeBias, CEO of AMR. If you're lazy to read the scroll down version then you can directly read the full article after the scroll down version.

source : prlog.org

A few weeks ago a new “job from home” offer hit the internet. Until today nearly 300,000 people from all over the world registered at websitetester.biz. But there are rumors that it is only a scam by fraudsters to collect email and bank data.

We contacted the initiator, Alpha Market Research, Inc. (AMR), to find some answers. We thank Michael DeBias, CEO of AMR, for the first official interview.

Q: Michael, about two months ago, the site of the AMR Website Tester project went online. What kind of results have you received so far?

A: On June 8, our website, www.websitetester.biz, went “live”. Since then, on an average, three (3) new users per minute have registered – a total of more than 290,000 people from 144 different nations. We expect that by the end of the pre-launch of August 31, some 360,000 website testers will be registered.

Q: Did you expect this success?

A: No! We knew that our project with users and businesses would be received well, but this overwhelming rush really surprised us.

Q: What are the reactions of companies?

A: We have already received numerous inquiries from companies that would like to have one or more of their websites tested. Now our aim is to contact as many companies as possible with our AMR Success Strategy.

Q: What’s so new about your service?

A: So far, most website tests are restricted to test the functions and usability of websites. Those tests miss the most important dimension – namely, the question of: “In general, how do the users like the website?” But this is crucial for the success or failure of a website. How does it help, when your website has a shopping cart with great features, but most visitors leave the website without placing an order?

Our testers are focused precisely on this area and provide valuable information to businesses where their website could be improved in terms of design and content.

Q: Isn’t that what surveys are for?

A: Many companies have placed a survey on their website to gather comments from their visitors. But there’s a catch: only very few users are willing to invest time for such a survey. Also there will be rarely no opinions of potential customers, and those opinions are exactly what the companies need in order to make any improvements.

Our site testers visit the websites of our clients in order to evaluate them. We make sure that only the testers that belong to the target group of the company assess the pages. In fact, each tester is simultaneously a potential new client (if he likes the site or the product and if any coupon is offered).

Q: Are you assuming that your site testers are becoming customers of your clients?

A: No website tester is obligated to buy any product or to order anything. But, if they like an offer, why shouldn’t they use it? That is why we encourage companies to offer a product-purchase coupon to the tester, as part of their compensation. From the company’s point of view, there is no cost initially for the coupon and from the tester’s point of view, they are happier to see a $5 coupon than let’s say, 20 cents.

Q: Can you illustrate that with an example?

A: Absolutely! Consider a company that offers professional e-books. A tester, who needs only five minutes of time to evaluate this site, might discover an e-book that interests him – if so, it is much better for him to be compensated with US$ 1.00 plus a $5 coupon rather than US$1.20. And all the testers who do not use the coupon have earned a very respectable, pro-rated income of US$ 12 per hour.

The company lowers its cost for the test by giving out coupons, and has a good chance to get the first new customers right through the website test.

Q: This is convincing. Are there any other advantages for the company?

A: When a website test for a company is completed, we setup a special affiliate program for each company. Our site testers then automatically become an “Army of Affiliates” that provide risk-free sales for the companies.

Q: How expensive is this service to the company?

A: In any case, less costly than you might think: Regional companies can use our AMR Success Strategy from US$ 99 plus a small fee for each completed website test. Even International companies are still under US$ 1,000 set-up costs.

Q: In some forums, one could read that it is AMR’s goal just to collect the email addresses of the users or to know the users’ bank data.

A: If that were our intention, we would hardly hire Country Managers and Affiliate Management Consultants around the world for the acquisition and processing of website-tester jobs.

On the other hand, it is not surprising that such speculations have arisen because there are some black sheep on the Internet. We appreciate when active users warn others of a possible fraud. In the case of AMR, however, these warnings are false and unfounded.

Q: In a blog, it has been stated that AMR probably is initiated by fraudsters from Africa…

A: … in another, that we are a sect from Australia! (Laughs) The truth is that we are a US based company, founded and registered in the state of Nevada. Each user can check this information easily online at the official website of the Secretary of State of the State of Nevada. I myself live in Las Vegas, Nevada, where we maintain a small office for administration tasks. Most of the work is done by our international team.

Q: How big is the AMR Team?

A: To respond professionally to this high number of applications and the overwhelming interest of the companies, our team is growing almost daily. Our team consists of programmers, marketing professionals, administrative staff, country managers and affiliate experts. In total, more than 50 people contribute to the success of our project. At the end of 2010, there will be about 200 team members.

Q: What are your goals for Alpha Market Research, Inc.?

A: Alpha is the first letter in the alphabet. And that is the perfect position for AMR in international comparison. Already during the pre-launch, we have built the world’s largest network of website testers – Alexa.com lists us as one of the 8,000 most frequented sites throughout the Internet and on Google.com we are # 1 on hits for the search term “website tester”. Not bad for a start-up company after only two months, right?

Q: That’s true! On your pre-launch website, you name for each user a so-called “potential income”. How realistic is this number?

A: This figure is the maximum income that a website tester can reach under optimal conditions. We are not able to provide these optimal conditions right from day one, September 1, because we have to allow some time to pass to accumulate actual competed website tests. Then of course a lot depends on the readiness of the single site tester. What I can guarantee them is that each website tester will be compensated in a fair manner for his job performance.

Q: Thank you for this interview!

A: You’re welcome!

After reading it, I think the website tester that they're going to launch will give a win-win situation to us and to other company/website owner. Below is one of the answers I extracted from the article. Somewhat true and I do agree with it. What say you? If you haven't sign-up, you still have chance to do so today. Free! Just name and email. Make money straight away and no referral required.

"..companies placed a survey on their website to gather comments from their visitors. However, only very few users are willing to invest time for such a survey. No opinions of potential customers, and those opinions are exactly what the companies need in order to make any improvements.

Companies that's interested to get more customers can try their promising product here. You need to market out your company or website if you want to be successful. You must test your website/product beforehand to see the feedback and the market that you will enter. Hence, website tester would be the right place for you to begin with.

Fourteen days of Ghost Festival

>> Monday, August 23, 2010

So, yeah...it's the 'wooh-wooooh' (spooky sound effect) Ghost Month. Seventh month in chinese calendar. Frankly speaking, I don't know about this; after my friends talked about it and I read it somewhere.

Below is the lazyversionQuickaccess of the information about Ghost Festival which is taken from wikipedia.

Ghost Festival a.k.a the Hungry Ghost Festival is a traditional Chinese festival and holiday celebrated by Chinese in many countries. In the Chinese calendar (a lunisolar calendar), the Ghost Festival is on the 15th night of the seventh lunar month (14th in southern China).

In Chinese tradition, the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar is called Ghost Day and the seventh month in general is regarded as the Ghost Month (鬼月 guǐ yuè), in which ghosts and spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm. On Ghost Day, the deceased are believed to visit the living.

On the fifteenth day the realms of Heaven and Hell and the realm of the living are open and both Taoists and Buddhists would perform rituals to transmute and absolve the sufferings of the deceased. Intrinsic to the Ghost Month is ancestor worship, where traditionally the filial piety of descendants extends to their ancestors even after their deaths. Activities during the month would include preparing ritualistic food offerings, burning incense, and burning joss paper, a papier-mache form of material items such as clothes, gold and other fine goods for the visiting spirits of the ancestors. Elaborate meals (often vegetarian meals) would be served with empty seats for each of the deceased in the family treating the deceased as if they are still living. Ancestor worship is what distinguishes Qingming Festival from Ghost Festival because the latter includes paying respects to all deceased, including the same and younger generations, while the former only includes older generations. Other festivities may include, buying and releasing miniature paper boats and lanterns on water, which signifies giving directions to the lost ghosts and spirits of the ancestors and other deities.

Religious Festivities

The Ghost Festival - celebrated during the seventh month of the Chinese calendar. Falls at the same time as a full moon, the new season, the fall harvest, the peak of Buddhist monastic asceticism, the rebirth of ancestors, and the assembly of the local community.

During this month, the gates of hell are opened up and ghosts are free to roam the earth where they seek food and entertainment. These ghosts are believed to be ancestors of those who forgot to pay tribute to them after they died, or those who were never given a proper ritual send-off. They have long needle-thin necks because they have not been fed by their family, or as a punishment so that they are unable to swallow. Family members offer prayers to their deceased relatives, offer food and drink and burn hell bank notes and other forms of joss paper. Joss paper items are believed to have value in the afterlife, considered to be very similar in some aspects to the material world, People burn paper houses, cars, servants and televisions to please the ghosts.

Families also pay tribute to other unknown wandering ghosts so that these homeless souls do not intrude on their lives and bring misfortune. A large feast is held for the ghosts on the fourteenth day of the seventh month, when people brings samples of food and places them on an offering table to please the ghosts and ward off bad luck.

In some East Asian countries today, live performances are held and everyone is invited to attend. The first row of seats are always empty as this is where the ghosts sit. The shows are always put on at night and at high volumes as the sound is believed to attract and please the ghosts. Some shows include Chinese opera, dramas, and in some areas, even burlesque shows. These acts are better known as "Merry-making".

For rituals, Buddhists and Taoists hold ceremonies to relieve ghosts from suffering, many of them holding ceremonies in the afternoon or at night (as it is believed that the ghosts are released from hell when the sun sets). Altars are built for the deceased and priests and monks alike perform rituals for the benefit of ghosts. Monks and priests often throw rice or other small foods into the air in all directions to distribute them to the ghosts.

During the evening, incense is burnt in front of the doors households. Incense stands for prosperity in Chinese culture, so families believe that there is more prosperity in burning more incense. During the festival, some shops are closed as they want to leave the streets open for the ghosts. In the middle of each street stands an altar of incense with fresh fruit and sacrifices displayed on it.

Fourteen days after the festival, to make sure all the hungry ghosts find their way back to hell, people flow water lanterns and set them outside their houses (a practice that can be found amongst the Japanese during Obon). These lanterns are made by setting a lotus flower-shaped lantern on a paper boat. The lanterns are used to direct the ghosts back to the underworld, and when they go out, it symbolizes that they have found their way back.

As of 23th of August 2010, the 14th day of Ghost Festival..... do not go out at night, do not go anywhere, stay at home and do not visit the graveyard for fun... But if you insist, don't forget to share your story with me... hehe. Check it out at 43things.com on how to visit a graveyard at midnight. There are lesson and tips there.

My Observation : Burning joss paper and burning incense outside the house/roadside. Food offerings. Quiet road, less car, less people in kopitiam. Uncle 'curi' buah-buahan from the plate at the roadside...

Talking bout ghost, I remembered my friend told me her friend went to visit graveyard after midnight. They were four or five of them. Did that cus they were bored and it was the 'safest' time to visit that place as it was the bulan puasa month or raya. They said 'bulan ramadan tiada hantu'.

So, this month tiada hantu and ada hantu....

Parthu kollungal!

Say NO to turtle eggs

>> Monday, August 9, 2010

Extracted from the news. Click the title for full article.

X-rated egg rush in Terengganu (TheStar)

Shocking! - Traders openly selling endangered turtle eggs that were collected from the beaches of Terengganu.

This is a MYTH - that turtle eggs could improve sexual prowess was a myth. However, it failed to stop couples wanting to revive their flagging sex lives from buying the eggs.

Huge demand for these eggs as they were claimed useful to treat asthma and backaches.

The endangered Green Turtle is the largest hard-shelled sea turtle in the world. Females lay their eggs at night in a process that takes two hours, each time laying 110 to 115 eggs.

The leatherback and Olive Ridley turtles are already said to be close to extinction in Terengganu while the number of Hawksbill and Green Turtles has also plunged drastically.

It has been reported that a leading cause for the decline of turtle species is egg consumption.

Save the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) @ Penyu Agar/Penyu Pulau. More info of this turtle can be found in turtleconservationcentre.

Population:
  • Leatherback turtles - declined by more than 99%
  • Olive ridley turtles - declined by more than 95%
  • Green turtles - Some populations in Malaysia appear to be stable currently. However compared to population numbers prior to 1970, large populations in Terengganu & Sarawak have decreased significantly (more than two folds)
  • Hawksbill turtles - Large populations remain only in Sabah & Malacca. Both populations appear to be stabilising. However it should be noted that historical nesting data in Malacca extended to 1990, which is quite recent and too short term to surmise on population trend.
Source : Liew,2002 in WWF Malaysia

Taken from WWF website; message/reminder to all on "What You Can Do"

To save our turtles...

  1. Do not buy souvenirs made from turtles.
  2. Do not buy and create a demand for turtle eggs. Allow the eggs to be incubated naturally where laid.
  3. Ensure rubbish is properly disposed of. Plastic bags floating in the ocean are often mistaken for food, and when eaten, may cause a turtle’s death.
  4. Do not light up fires or make noise on a nesting beach. These activities may disturb a nesting turtle.
  5. Avoid using illegal, non-turtle friendly fishing devices. A turtle caught in fishing gear may drown and die.
  6. Support turtle conservation efforts and pass on the conservation message.
Why not we just spread via word-of-mouth, that the turtle eggs that these shallow people consumed are actually dangerous to their health and won't bring any benefit at all. Make it a fact and so everyone will believe it and scared to consume it. Hehe!! Ok, not-so-practical...

People! You don't need the protein from the sea turtle's egg. Traders! There are many other alternative products you can sell. No supply, No demand. Got demand, No supply... No supply, until the level of demand is 'dead'.

Perfume Scams Online * Part One 1*

>> Sunday, August 8, 2010

If you think you've found a great deal, cheap price, an attractive bargain on perfume from website like Ebay, be sure to check on seller's profile and feedback.

Few things (precaution steps) to do before placing bid or buying item.

(a) Read through what other customers have to say about the seller.
Only satisfied customer who really did received the perfume will give good and positive feedback/review/comment.

(b) What item did the customers purchased?
Although seller is selling perfume mainly (in which the customer's feedback should be related to perfume that they purchased), sometimes if you click on the item details, it is other non-related item.

(c) Did the perfume arrive as expected?
You can always check on seller's identity elsewhere to find out if other buyers receive their item on time or not.

(d) Other than that, see how's the feedback 'pattern' like
See clearly and you will notice the same buyer (nickname) giving feedback to the seller. Or the way the feedback/comment given. The comments are always written/phrased in almost the same manner.

(e) and spend time to check on some of the buyer's profile and feedback page.
You will see the feedback are mostly contributed by the same buyer with ZERO or less than 10 feedback. When you go to their feedback page, you will notice some familiar id/nickname of other buyers that had left feedback on the perfume seller's page also.

Example : Perfume seller (A), Buyer 1 (B), Buyer 2 (C), Buyer 3 (D). Feedback page of A with good ratings and high number of feedback. In there, you saw some of other buyers left their feedback. You randomly choose buyer B, C, and D, and check their profile and feedback page. In buyer B's feedback page, you notice buyer D had left feedback there. In buyer C's page, buyer B had left feed back there....vice versa and so on. You can click on all the IDs on the perfume seller 's feedback page. That is better and I highly recommend everyone to do that. Although it may seem like time-consuming or wasting time, but better safe than sorry.

I don't know

I didn't feel the fairy tale feeling no
am I a stupid girl
for even dreaming that I could

If it's not like the movies
That's how it should be yeah
when he's the one I'll come undone
and my world will stop spinning
and that's just the beginning yeah

Snow White said when i was young
one day my prince will come
So I wait for that date

they say it's hard to meet your match
gotta find my better half
so we make perfect shapes

the stars don't align
if it doesn't stop time
if you can't see the sign
wait for it

100 percent with every penny spent
he'll be the one that finishes your sentences.

if it's not like the movies
that's how it should be
when he's the one I'll come undone
and my world will stop spinning
and that's just the beginning

ohhhh yeah
cause I know you're out there and
you're you're looking for me ohh
it's a crazy idea that you were
made perfectly for me you'll see

just like the movies
that's how it will be

Cinematic and dramatic
with a perfect ending
Ohhh

it's not like the movies ohhh
but that's how it should be yeah
when he's the one you'll come undone
and your world will stop spinning

and it's just the beginning
